Music

Music is well said to be the speech of angels
Thomas Carlyle

There is a vibrant musical life at Sussex House. We have our own Music School in Cadogan Street and the splendid facilities include a Model D Concert Grand Steinway in the Ballroom.

All pupils attend music classes which include musical appreciation, ensemble work and singing; they are introduced to basic musical forms, musical notation and theory.

The Director of Music heads a team of visiting instrumental teachers. Over 70 per cent of the school plays a musical instrument or takes singing lessons.

The annual musical programme includes a series of ‘Ballroom Concerts’, and weekly choral services. There are two concerts held at the inspirational building St Mary Magdalene, Little Venice. Firstly the ‘Singers and Soloists Concert’ which gives members of the school the opportunity to perform concerto movements with a professional orchestra. On All Soul’s day the Sussex House Choir perform a Requiem, again with a professional orchestra and conducted by the Head Master. The musical year ends with an ambitious orchestral and choral Summer Concert at Cadogan Hall. This is also an opportunity for pupils to perform in their own bands and jazz ensembles. A musical is performed annually at a West End theatre.

Numerous music scholarships to senior schools have been won.
